Hello Kansas Cyclist and Bicycle Enthusiast,
My name is Heath Glenn and I am the vice-president of Kaw Valley Bicycle Club in Topeka. I am working with Alan Apel, also with our club, to get modifications and/or additions made to the current state statues as they affect cyclist.
The current state statues as they apply to cyclist are vague at best. Our goal is to get statutes in place to better protect cyclist and to have penalties associated for those who do not adhere to the statutes. I have attached a draft of what we are proposing as the statute modifications. Please keep in mind we are cyclist and not law writers. This draft was put together by reviewing statutes that were recently put into place in surrounding states and we are sure they will be somewhat modified once they get into legislation.
We are confident that we will be able to acquire a bill # in the next legislative session. We also feel that it will be imperative to let our lawmakers know that the Kansas cycling community wants change.
This is where we need your help. Along with the proposed statute changes I have attached a support sign-up sheet. I ask that you pass this information around at your club meetings, at group rides or to patrons of your bike shops. Also feel free to forward this to anyone I may have missed. The reason for the support sign-up sheet is to aid us in building a data base of supporters. This way we will be able to get any updated information out as efficiently as possible. I ask that as you get sign-up sheets filled up to please forward them to Alan or me.
The proposed statute changes can also be viewed at our web site www.kvbc.org under the news tab. Please remember your friends and neighbors as well. They may not be cyclist themselves but chances are they have children or grandchildren who are.
